How do you set cake layers on top of each other?

I am making a wedding cake and have never done it before, how do you stack layers on top of each other? How do you set cake layers on top of each other?
Just how many layers are you making? If this is the first time you're making a wedding cake, you need to get some knowledge about using the dowels. They are little plastic pieces that you have to stick in the cake to support the weight of multiple cakes. Please refer to the Wilton webiste to help you or this cake could turn out disasterous.

Stack smallest to largest, to get them to stick, spread frosting in between the layers. Then frosting around the sides, of course.
If stacking directly on top of eachother ice the cakes and have them on cake boards. Take straws or wooden dowels and stick them in the cake to use as supports. When doing this I preffer straws because they are easier to cut( you have to use a few more since they are not as strong as wooden dowels ) stick them in uncut then take it out and where the icing line ends cut with scissors so you have the straws exact. then sprinkle cocnut, cake crumbs, cookie crumbs on the top of the cake an inch or so smaller than the cake your putting on top so when you cut the cake you can take the tiers off easily. Hope this helped a little.

Stacked wedding cakes have wooden sticks in them to hold them together. There must be a website that will give you specific directions.
