What is ozone layer?

the ozone layer is a layer of summat that protects the earth from harmful raysWhat is ozone layer?
(m)

The ozone layer, or ozonosphere layer (rarely used term), is that part of the Earth's atmosphere which contains relatively high concentrations of ozone (O3). ';Relatively high'; means a few parts per million - much higher than the concentrations in the lower atmosphere but still small compared to the main components of the atmosphere. The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson. Its properties were explored in detail by the British meteorologist G. M. B. Dobson, who developed a simple spectrophotometer that could be used to measure stratospheric ozone from the ground. Between 1928 and 1958 Dobson established a worldwide network of ozone monitoring stations which continues to operate today. The ';Dobson unit';, a convenient measure of the total amount of ozone in a column overhead, is named in his honor. What is ozone layer?
A thin layer of o3 (ozone) that filters out much of the suns UV rays. It is thinest at the polar caps. There is also a hole the size of the US in it over the arctic. It's very important, it stops us from becoming ';French Fries'; from the sun
The shield of gas that lies at least 20 km above us and protects us from harmful UV rays that the sun spews out. Ozone is like oxygen in the air we breath, except it has 3 atoms (not 2). If the UV rays reached us without the protection of the ozone layer we would all fry to a crisp.... ever seen the barbie doll melt in the Australian sun, that's due to the depletion of the ozone layer. The depletion is occuring due to CFCs which were massively present in aerosol cans and fridges years ago. Despite having reduced CFCs in recent years they continue to do damage. This damage to the ozone means that the polar ice caps have started to melt, which in turn causes the sea levels to rise. Ultimately low lying land could be flooded and the whole geography of the world changed. Pretty scary. Although some argue that other pollutants we have pumped into the atmosphere actually cause the sunlight to defract therefore reducing its strength and counteracting the ozone depletion. Only time will tell.....
it is the protective layer around the earth which protects the earth from harmful ultravoilet radiation coming from sun by filtering it.
ozone is made up of oxygen molecules that are going around in 3's rather than the usual 2's more common nearer the ground.

It is the O2 molecules that organisms like to use for their oxygen needs

O3 (ozone) has rather different properties and is thought to be formed very near to the earth's surface when pollution , say from cars and the like is present and not where it is needed higher up in the atmosphere
Ozone Layer or ozonosphere, region of the stratosphere containing relatively high concentrations of ozone, located at altitudes of 12鈥?0 mi (19鈥?8 km) above the earth's surface. Ozone in the ozone layer is formed by the action of solar ultraviolet light on oxygen.

The ozone layer prevents most ultraviolet (UV) and other high-energy radiation from penetrating to the earth's surface but does allow through sufficient ultraviolet rays to support the activation of vitamin D in humans. The full radiation, if unhindered by this filtering effect, would destroy animal tissue. Higher levels of radiation resulting from the depletion of the ozone layer have been linked with increases in skin cancers and cataracts and have been implicated in the decline of certain amphibian species.
layer that protects the earth from harmful rays WOOOOHOOOO
oxone is the layer surrounding the earth that protects it from UV rays. its made up of oxygen atoms just like the ones v breathe. but the ones v breathe r in pairs of two forming a molecule O2, %26amp; the 1 in the ozone layer r made up of 3 oxygen atoms O3. this layer is currently thinning out due the the pollution in the atmosphere like on the poles %26amp; in australia.
