What does it mean to have layers in your hair?

Should I have it done, and does anyone have before/after pictures? What does it mean to have layers in your hair?
Layers = Having different lengths throughout your hair, which looks more trendy, textured, modern and special.

Most haircuts have layers, unless it is really short, a crew cut, shaved, a bowl cut....

Here are some pics of nice men's cuts that have lots of layers/lengths throughout to make it look more rough and edgy.

* To see the layers, focus on the ends of the hair and how they are all different and don't match up, %26amp; how the hair looks thinner towards the ends.*What does it mean to have layers in your hair?
Layers simply means that the hair in a certain area of the scalp is all cut the same length. In other words, if all the hair on the head is cut to the same exact length, such as four inches, the hair will have an almost infinite number of layers that can form. The antithesis of layered hair would be a blunt cut. The hair is all cut as it hangs down from the scalp at a certain point, such as chin length all around the head. This causes all the hair on the head to be cut a different length.
Step cutting will give you layers!
