How do flakey dinner rolls get their layers?

I know this is really random, but I'm dying to know, haha. How do flakey dinner rolls get their layers?
When rolling the dough, butter is placed on the layer and it is folded over an rolled out and then more butter is added and the dough is folded over and rolled again. The same process as making puff pastry but not as many layers or quite as much butter. In the cooking, the butter releases it's moisture creating puffs of air pockets in the rolls. How do flakey dinner rolls get their layers?
You're welcome, thank you. Report Abuse

The dough is rolled flat, then folded over and rolled flat again, over and over. Air gets trapped between the folding.
butter...lots and lots of butter between the layers of dough
